What the guides say

The short version of each, before you read it.

Free habit trackers with unlimited habits: limits checked

  • Of 24 other habit trackers we checked on October 1, 2026, only 3 state a number for their free tier: Habitify (3 habits), HabitKit (4) and Routinery (2 routines).
  • Five more say unlimited habits is a paid feature but do not say how many the free tier allows; the rest say nothing about a cap.
  • 22 of the 24 list in-app purchases on the App Store. Streaks is a one-time $5.99 app; HabitShare lists no purchases at all.
  • 8 of the 24 declare 'Data Used to Track You' on their App Store privacy label.

Habit tracker that forgives missed days: what to look for

  • A forgiving habit tracker uses one or more of four mechanisms: a grace day, planned rest days, partial credit, or a pause for time away.
  • The original habit-formation study found that missing one opportunity did not materially affect the process of forming a habit.
  • In 1,764 recent low-star reviews of 18 habit apps, 17 described losing a streak, and 15 of those blamed a bug, an update, sync or lost data, not the app's rules.
  • So forgiving also means never losing your history to a bug: look for backup, export or sync you can check.

Best habit tracker apps (2026): 25 compared on real data

  • Start with three questions: how many habits you track, which devices you use, and whether you want a game or a plain list.
  • Ratings are close at the top: 21 of the 24 established apps here average 4.6 stars or more, so price, devices and missed-day rules decide more than stars.
  • 8 of the 24 declare 'Data Used to Track You' on their App Store privacy label; HabitShare's last update is dated January 27, 2023.
  • In 1,764 recent low-star reviews of 18 of these apps, 944 used money or billing words and 272 described bugs.

Habit tracker for night owls: reset your day at bedtime

  • Most habit apps end the day at midnight, so anything you log after it counts toward tomorrow and today can look missed.
  • Of the apps we checked on October 1, 2026, Habitica documents a Custom Day Start setting; for Streaks, HabitKit and Habitify we found no public documentation either way.
  • Orbit moves the boundary from your bedtime: about two hours after it, never before midnight and never after 4am.
  • Any change to the boundary should apply from now on, not rewrite the days you already logged.

What happens when you stay consistent for 30 days?

  • Thirty days usually gets a habit past its steepest climb, but not to full automaticity.
  • In the best-known study, the median time to a habit plateau was 66 days, ranging from 18 to 254.
  • Missing one day did not meaningfully affect habit formation, so restart the next day at the same cue.
  • Daily, self-chosen and morning behaviours tended to become habits more strongly.

How long does it take to build a habit? Not 21 days

  • The 21-day figure is a myth. The best-known study found a median of 66 days, with a range from 18 to 254.
  • One missed day made no measurable difference to how automatic a habit became. Returning the next time is what mattered.
  • Habits form fastest when tied to a stable cue, kept small, done at the same time and place, and rewarded quickly.
  • Give a new behaviour two months before judging it, and expect effortful ones to take longer.
