Is 11 pm a good bedtime? What the research suggests
For most adults, 11 pm is a fine bedtime if you can still get seven hours and keep the same time every night. Regularity matters more than the exact hour.

☾ Sleep
How much sleep do adults need? What the consensus says
Seven hours or more a night, regularly, is the joint recommendation of the sleep medicine bodies. Where the number comes from and why timing matters too.
What the guides say
The short version of each, before you read it.
Is 11 pm a good bedtime? What the research suggests
- For most adults, 11 pm is a fine bedtime if you wake at 6:30am or later, which leaves about seven hours, the CDC's minimum.
- In a study of about 88,000 UK adults, falling asleep between 10 and 11 pm was linked to the lowest rate of heart problems; 11 to midnight was about 12% higher.
- A 2023 study of about 61,000 adults found sleep regularity predicted risk better than sleep length.
- Both studies are observational: they show links, not cause and effect.
How much sleep do adults need? What the consensus says
- Seven hours or more a night, regularly, is the joint recommendation of the sleep medicine bodies; seven to nine is the National Sleep Foundation range.
- A steady wake time, weekends included, does more for sleep than an early bedtime.
- Two weeks of six-hour nights impaired people as much as two nights without sleep, and they barely noticed.
- Light, caffeine timing, alcohol, a cool room and a repeated wind-down are the habits with real evidence.
